The first professor to teach specialized therapy of internal diseases with clinical practice in internal medicine at the Lviv Veterinary School was the school’s director, Petro Zaifman (1881–1894).
Petro Zaifman was a Doctor of Medicine, ordinary Professor of Pathology and Clinical Internal Diseases, as well as of Epizootiology and Veterinary Police, and simultaneously the first Director of the Veterinary School in Lviv. He held this position for 13 years, making significant contributions as a scholar and educator. He actively participated in scientific societies, including the Society of Natural Sciences, the Galician Medical Society, and the Galician Veterinary Society, becoming an honorary member of the latter in 1892.
In July 2012, the Departments of Clinical Diagnostics and Internal Animal Diseases were merged. The newly established unit was named the Department of Internal Animal Diseases and Clinical Diagnostics, headed by Doctor of Veterinary Sciences, Professor Liubov Hryhorivna Slivinska.
The primary focus of the Department throughout its history has been the training of veterinary doctors. Most practical sessions are conducted with live animals, allowing students to study clinical symptoms in detail, learn diagnostic methods, and develop approaches for treatment and prevention.
Currently, faculty members, postgraduate researchers, and students are engaged in long-term research on the topic: “Modern Methods of Diagnosing Internal Pathologies in Farm and Domestic Animals, Development of Treatment Approaches and Preventive Therapies Using Innovative Technologies to Preserve Health and Ensure Productivity.”

The Department trains specialists in the control of food safety and quality. Veterinary sanitary inspection is a core activity within veterinary medicine, as public health and the economic stability of the state depend directly on the safety and quality of food products.
The Department’s history dates back to 1881 with the establishment of an independent veterinary school in Lviv. Following its transformation into the Lviv Veterinary Academy in 1897, veterinary-sanitary expertise developed rapidly, beginning with courses on Animal and Meat Inspection and Meat Science. Between 1881 and 1921, these courses were taught by Professors A. Baranskyi, Ya. Prus, M. Hrabovskyi, Z. Markovskyi, T. Holobut, and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine A. Gotlib. Notably, Professor Alfred Travinsky established a separate department in 1925 called the Institute of Animal-Derived Food Science, to which the Milk Hygiene course was added in 1930.
Currently, the Department’s staff focus on integrating international standards for food safety and quality into the educational process, increasing the proportion of laboratory-based training in production environments, and maintaining international collaboration with leading universities and organizations.
In 2024, the Department participated in the accreditation of the educational program Veterinary Hygiene, Sanitation, and Expertise. As a result, the National Agency for Higher Education Quality Assurance highly evaluated the educational environment and granted positive accreditation approval, valid until 1 July 2029.
