The first head of the Department of Geodesy was M. V. Solovyov, with the first faculty members being demobilized military personnel M. V. Zakopaylo, O. M. Yatsenko, B. V. Goldyrev, and laboratory assistant L. O. Pelekh.
In subsequent years, the Department was led by Professor T. P. Magazynshchikov and Associate Professors B. V. Goldyrev, Ye. K. Nikolskyi, V. O. Pervago, M. F. Abramovich, M. I. Hrynyuk, S. M. Vashchyk, S. S. Periy, Senior Lecturer Ya. V. Khlyan, and Associate Professor P. P. Kolodiy. Since February 2023, the Department has been headed by Professor R. M. Stupen.
In 1988, a reorganization of the institute’s departments resulted in the merger of the Department of Land Reclamation and Hydraulic Engineering into the Department of Geodesy. Faculty members V. H. Hrushchenko, S. M. Vashchyk, L. V. Zaiatchkivska, and V. Moroz joined the department. The Department was renamed the Department of Geodesy and Land Reclamation.
In 2007, by the resolution of the Academic Council of Lviv State Agrarian University (June 21, 2007), considering the trends and directions in geodetic science, land management, and the needs of the national economy of Ukraine, the Department was renamed the Department of Geodesy and Geoinformatics.
