The Department was founded in 1946.

From its establishment until 1965, the Lviv Agricultural Institute (LSGI) did not possess its own sports facilities. To conduct classes and mass sports activities for students, the Institute rented sports venues in the city of Lviv. In 1965, after the Institute’s complete relocation to Dublyany, the Department received sports facilities at its disposal.

The Department of Physical Education and Pre-Military Training is an interfaculty unit of Lviv National Environmental University. Its educational and training infrastructure, as well as the learning process, are continuously being improved. The Department has developed and implemented in the curriculum a student pentathlon program entitled “Formula of Excellence”—a universal rating-based test system for assessing physical condition and an effective means of fostering students’ physical development.

The methodological support of the Department’s educational process is based on syllabi designed in accordance with the standard “Physical Education Curriculum.”

From its foundation until 1990, the most developed sports at the University included basketball, volleyball, freestyle wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestling, judo, boxing, gymnastics, cycling, skiing, weightlifting, handball, shooting, football, athletics, multi-sport competitions, and sports tourism.

The University’s representative teams regularly participated in championships among higher education institutions of Lviv, in the competitions of the “Kolos” Sports Society, the Central Council of “Kolos,” as well as in all-Ukrainian competitions for agricultural higher education institutions, and in the championships of Ukraine, Europe, and the world.

Between 1947 and 2024, the University trained 4 Honored Masters of Sport (in weightlifting, freestyle wrestling, and kettlebell lifting), 9 Masters of Sport of International Class (in handball, weightlifting, freestyle wrestling, football, powerlifting, canoe sprint, arm wrestling, and archery), more than 26 Masters of Sport (in weightlifting, athletics, handball, table tennis, kettlebell lifting, artistic gymnastics, volleyball, archery, arm wrestling, and freestyle wrestling), 315 Candidate Masters of Sport, and over 2,100 students who achieved mass sports categories.
